Islamabad: In a recent cabinet meeting, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar emphasized the use of vertical buildings for housing development in the capital city. This directive aims to optimize land usage and avoid encroaching on valuable agricultural land, as previously done through plot allotment to government employees.
The Prime Minister instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to create a specific policy promoting vertical living solutions. This decision follows an Islamabad High Court ruling requiring the CDA to evaluate the financial implications of offering subsidized plots to its employees. However, the cabinet has postponed a final decision on the proposed allotment policy.
Benefits of Vertical Living:
- Land Conservation: Building upwards preserves precious agricultural land and green spaces, preventing urban sprawl and supporting sustainable development.
- Increased Density: Vertical housing enables higher population density within a smaller footprint, fostering vibrant communities and economic activity.
- Shared Amenities: Apartment buildings often offer shared facilities like gyms, pools, and green spaces, promoting community connections and potentially reducing individual infrastructure costs.
- Enhanced Infrastructure: High-rise developments may attract investments in better public transportation, waste management, and energy systems, benefiting the entire city.
- Improved Accessibility: Vertical living can simplify access to essential services and amenities concentrated within walking or biking distance.
While transitioning to vertical living comes with its own challenges, such as ensuring adequate infrastructure and addressing community needs, the potential benefits for land preservation, resource efficiency, and vibrant urban centers make it a promising solution for sustainable development in Islamabad and beyond.
