The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to construct two new electric bus depots in Islamabad, a move that comes behind schedule and is vital for housing and servicing the fleet of electric buses recently imported from China.
Upon the arrival of the first 30 electric buses (a segment of a larger 160-bus order), Islamabad has set the wheels in motion to establish two dedicated facilities for the upkeep of the green transit initiative. The depots, with a construction timeline extending over six months, will provide essential services, including charging stations, rest areas for drivers, maintenance sheds, and washing zones—integral components for the smooth operation of the electric bus network.
The CDA is earmarking Rs.632.06 million for a depot stationed strategically at Tramari Chowk. Meanwhile, another depot between sectors I-9 and H-9 bears an estimated cost of Rs.604.4 million. These establishments will play a key role, in enhancing the readiness of Islamabad’s infrastructure to support electric transportation.
Registered construction firms have been invited to submit their bids by January 24 as the CDA hastens to facilitate the forthcoming batches of electric buses, with the next shipment expected by the month’s end. Early completion of the bus stations would have accelerated the rollout of electric bus operations; hence, timeliness is now even more critical for this ambitious project to electrify the city’s public transport fleet.
