Pending Gas Connection Applications Surpass 3.25 Million Mark.

Islamabad: The number of pending applications for new gas connections has exceeded 3.25 million, leading to a moratorium on indigenous gas connections. However, the caretaker government has permitted the provision of 15,000 new LNG-based connections to housing societies.

Currently, both Sui gas companies, Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited, are dealing with the staggering number of pending applications. The Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited has 3 million pending applications, while Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) has 250,000 pending requests for new gas connections.

To cater to the large number of pending applications, an additional LNG terminal is required. The SNGPL has been authorized to provide new imported LNG-based gas connections exclusively to housing societies, with approximately 15,000 connections allocated to 300-400 private societies.

During the PTI government, a ban was imposed on new gas connections in 2021. However, clarity was needed regarding whether the ban applied to LNG-based connections as well. After the intervention of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), it was revealed that the ban only pertained to indigenous gas-based connections, and there was no restriction on LNG-based gas connections.
