Dubai is set to become one of the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities with the launch of the ‘Dubai Walk’ Master Plan. Approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative aims to promote healthier lifestyles, enhance urban connectivity, and redefine quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
A Massive Network of Walkways
At the heart of the plan is the development of a vast 6,500 km network of pedestrian walkways. This includes the construction of 3,300 km of new paths and the upgrading of 2,300 km of existing ones by 2040. Beyond 2040, an additional 900 km is planned. To ensure seamless connectivity across the city, the plan also includes the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses, prioritizing safety, comfort, and accessibility for all.
Three Types of Walkways
The walkways are classified into three key categories:
- Scenic-Leisure Walkways: Waterfront paths, green trails, and rural walkways to offer picturesque walking experiences.
- City Connectivity Walkways: Routes connecting public transport hubs with surrounding areas, supporting first- and last-mile travel.
- Community Walkways: Pathways linking residential areas to key attractions and essential community facilities.
A Vision for Quality of Life and Sustainability
Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that the plan is part of Dubai’s strategic vision to improve residents’ well-being and position the city as a global leader in sustainable development and modern infrastructure. “Our goal is to redefine mobility and quality of life,” Sheikh Mohammed stated on his X (formerly Twitter) account. “We are building a city where residents can enjoy the best, happiest, and healthiest lifestyle.”
The initiative is closely aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the ’20-Minute City’ concept, which seeks to ensure that residents can reach most daily destinations within a 20-minute walk or bike ride. The plan aims to increase pedestrian and soft mobility usage from 13% to 25% by 2040.
Pilot Projects and Key Routes
The first phase of the project, running from 2025 to 2027, will see the construction of 17 km of new walkways. Notable routes include:
- Al Ras Historical Route: A 15 km path showcasing Dubai’s rich heritage.
- The Future Loop: A 2 km elevated walkway encircling the Museum of the Future, providing a futuristic pedestrian experience.
These projects will preserve Dubai’s historical charm while incorporating modern, futuristic design elements. For instance, The Future Loop will link key landmarks such as the Dubai World Trade Centre, Museum of the Future, and nearby metro stations.
Smart Features and Cultural Integration
To create a unique walking experience, the plan will incorporate smart technology and cultural elements. Walkways will feature shaded areas, air-conditioned sections, greenery, misting systems, and interactive digital zones. A mobile app will allow users to track their walking activity, discover routes, and earn rewards for walking. Additionally, pathways will include cultural markers to celebrate Dubai’s rich heritage and diverse community.
Urban Transformation with Plazas, Superblocks, and Boulevards
The master plan aims to transform major city roads into vibrant pedestrian spaces. Roads like Al Khaleej and Jumeirah will be redesigned as pedestrian-friendly boulevards. The concept of Plazas, Superblocks, and Boulevards will be implemented in key locations to create lively urban spaces that prioritize pedestrian accessibility and community interaction.
A Global Pioneer in Urban Planning
The Dubai Walk Master Plan reflects Sheikh Mohammed’s forward-thinking approach to urban development, sustainability, and well-being. By prioritizing pedestrian mobility and community engagement, Dubai is solidifying its status as a global leader in smart, sustainable urban planning.
With its ambitious vision, smart features, and emphasis on quality of life, the Dubai Walk initiative is set to transform the city’s streets, improve mobility, and promote healthier living for all.
